Can an initiation work across distance? For many this sounds like a strange question. But anyone who practises Reiki already knows the answer: distance Reiki works. Energy follows intention, not physical proximity. And if that holds for a Reiki session — why not for an initiation?
This article explains how distance initiations work in Shingon Reiki, why they are no modern invention, and what sets them apart from a live event. And it describes what you actually experience as the one receiving.

Why distance initiations work 遠隔
In Shingon Reiki there is the distance Reiki symbol 本者是正念 Hon Sha Ze Shō Nen — literally: "the true human being is right mindfulness." This symbol bridges space and time. It is no trick and no metaphor. It is a technique that has been practised in the Shingon tradition for more than a thousand years.
The Shingon monks of Kōyasan have known the principle of distance transmission since Kūkai. In esoteric Buddhist practice there is Kaji 加持 — the transmission of force through ritual, mantra and intention. Kaji is not bound to physical presence. It works through the Three Mysteries: body, speech and mind. When all three are aligned, distance is no obstacle.
This does not mean that distance initiations are "the same" as a live event. They are different. But they are not less — they are their own form of transmission with their own quality.
How a distance initiation unfolds 流れ
A distance initiation in Shingon Reiki is not a passive video that you watch. It is a living ritual that happens in real time — across a video connection, with Mark or Eileen on the other side. You are not alone in front of a screen. You are in a shared space that stretches across the physical distance.
The flow follows the same structure as in a live event: Kenyoku for purification, Gasshō for alignment, then the initiation itself. Mark or Eileen carry out the ritual — with mantra, mudra and visualisation. On your side, you sit with eyes closed, hands in Gasshō, and receive.
What surprises many: the experience is often more intense than expected. Without the distraction of a group, without the journey, without the surroundings, you are completely with yourself. The space you prepare at home — a candle, silence, perhaps incense — becomes your personal temple for this moment.
Distance initiations do not replace personal contact. They complement it. In Shingon Reiki there are both online and live events — and many practitioners use both. The distance initiation opens the door. The live event deepens the encounter. Both have their place.
The tradition behind it 伝統
Distance transmissions are no invention of the digital age. In the Shingon tradition there are rituals in which monks on Kōyasan send blessing and protection to people hundreds of kilometres away. Kaji Kitō 加持祈祷 — ritual distance transmission — is an established practice with over a thousand years of history.
In early Japanese Reiki too, distance work was simply part of the practice. The technique Enkaku Chiryō Hō 遠隔治療法 — distance treatment method — was part of the original practice. The idea that Reiki needs physical presence is a Western assumption that contradicts the Japanese tradition.
What the internet adds is not the capacity for distance transmission — that has always been there. What it adds is the possibility of seeing, speaking and practising together at the same time. The technology does not replace the ritual. It gives it a new frame.
What you experience 体験
The experiences in a distance initiation are as individual as in a live event. Some feel intense warmth in the hands or throughout the body. Some see colours or images. Some experience a deep silence they did not know before. And some feel little at first — and only notice the change in the days afterwards, as the energy integrates.
After the initiation, an integration phase of 21 days begins. During this time you practise daily — the self-application that you received in the initiation. The energy settles. New perceptions open up. Some people report more vivid dreams, a different sense of the body, a feeling of inner clarity.
Online and live — not either/or 両方
In Shingon Reiki, distance initiations and live events are no competition. They are two forms of the same practice. Some people start online — because they are curious, because no live event happens nearby, or because they prefer the protected frame at home. Others come to a live event first and deepen online afterwards.
What a live event adds is the energy of the group. People practising together create a field that carries each individual. That is not better than the solitary experience — it is different. Like the difference between a solo instrument and an orchestra. Both are music.
Shingon Reiki offers both paths — by design. Because the path that is right for you is the one you walk. Not the one someone else considers right.
