Would you have thought that? Reiki is a Japanese style of Qigong. However, a very special one that differs from pretty much all other qigong styles in some important ways. We owe this to the founder of the Reiki method, Mikao Usui, who is considered one of the greatest Japanese Qigong masters of the 20th century.
The Qigong Master Mikao Usui
Are you wondering what makes me think that Mikao Usui was a qigong master? You may think that we are not so well acquainted, because Usui founded the Reiki healing method and did not practice Qigong.
Now you can be quite reassured, because both apply to Mikao Usui:
- Usui is the founder of Usui Reiki Ryoho – method of natural healing with spiritual life energy according to Usui
- Usui is known in Japan as one of the most famous qigong masters of the early 20th century. known.
I found this out when I bought a Japanese Qigong book in Tokyo. In it Usui is described as a Qigong master who had founded his own Qigong style with Reiki.
Aren’t Qigong and Reiki different things?
Of course, this is in great contradiction to the fact that many here in the West claim that Reiki and Qigong are two completely different things. But exactly the opposite is the case.
In the West, the Qigong practices of Mikao Usui have hardly been taught, because in many places Reiki has been reduced to a method of treating symptoms and diseases to activate the self-healing powers. When the so-called „Japanese Reiki techniques“ became known in the West about two decades ago, it quickly became apparent that they were different. But hardly anyone noticed the enormous Qigong elements in it. At the same time, it is also the case that the qigong contained therein has unfortunately been very watered down by transmission to the West, because they were simply passed on as techniques instead of understanding the mechanisms of qigong therein.
Why Usui knew Qigong
Usui succeeded in combining practices from Shingon Buddhism, Daoism and Shintô in such a way that since your initiation into the 1st degree you can immediately and safely transmit Reiki energy with your hands. Wow, monks in Japan need 30-50 years of training and hard ascetic exercises for this.
Daoism is the mother of many well-known methods such as Feng Shui, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Qigong. Because Usui was skilled in this and because it has been common in Japan for at least 1500 years to combine several spiritual traditions, he was able to develop the Usui Reiki healing method.
What do Qigong and Reiki have in common?
The connection between Qigong and Reiki is already clear in the words: the Ki in Reiki and the Qi in Qigong both mean life energy. Only that one is Chinese and the other is Japanese. Reiki translates as Spiritual Life Energy, Qigong as Cultivating Life Energy.
The way the energy is directed and guided is identical to the qi guidance of qigong when practicing qigong with qi. Many train Qigong rather as physical exercises to let the Qi flow. This is just one of many possibilities. In that case, the connections are less recognizable.
However, if we look at Reiki initiations, for example, one hand is held up to the sky to receive the energy. The other is applied to the crown to transfer the energy. This is a classic example of many qigong exercises.
And there is so much more that I coach in Qigong Reiki.
What is Qigong Reiki?
I was fortunate to study Buddhist Qigong, TCM and Taiji with a Chinese Grandmaster for seven years until this Master returned to China. In the process, I became aware of what Qigong actually is and the many similarities to Reiki. The master was not very enthusiastic about Reiki, because he did not really know it and did not want to know it. However, he and other students wondered why I always had so much qi and seemed to be able to continue training tirelessly while the others needed a break. In my case, this qi is the reiki force plus the cultivated qi from qigong.
Over the years I have experimented a lot and compared the findings with the trainings of Usui. In the process, I rediscovered and further developed the Secret Techniques with Mikao Usui. I could also find out
- where the Reiki force flows exactly through the body,
- that there are different types of Reiki
- and how to use them and pass them through the hands,
- to make previously impossible things possible with Reiki.
From this I have developed a new Shingon Reiki event, which has been named Qigong Reiki.
In Qigong Reiki we take a closer look at the connection between Reiki and Qigong:
- What are the similarities between these two spiritual traditions?
- Where exactly are the differences?
- What are useful combinations and how can you use Qigong Reiki for your Reiki practice?

More feeling in the hands with Qigong Reiki
Qigong Reiki is excellent for you to develop more feeling in your Reiki hands. In addition to the finer perception, your energy channels are properly cleaned, so that your system becomes completely permeable. This will allow you to provide even more Reiki as a Reiki channel and your applications will have much more power. By the way, this also applies to your Reiki initiations if you are already a Master.
Heart connections with Qigong Reiki
At the same time, through Qigong Reiki you will also become wonderfully relaxed and easy-going as a user. We also train how to open your heart and support others to build true, warming heart connections from person to person.
Use different types of Reiki
A real highlight is the different types of life-enhancing ki or qi that you will learn about in Qigong Reiki. Reiki is a very specific spiritual life energy and has as its source the Great Sun Buddha. In Qigong one knows still further energies, which can be transferred with the hands and regulate body, spirit and soul.
Through your Reiki initiation you already have experience in transmitting energy and can quickly learn to combine Reiki applications with these energies. This is convenient when you need cooling, for example. Reiki is generally perceived rather warm, but there is also cooling life energy. This opens up new orignal possibilities for your Reiki applications and you can use Reiki in a very targeted way.
For whom is Qigong Reiki suitable?
Qigong Reiki is suitable for anyone who wants to develop their Reiki skills in the paths of Mikao Usui. The founder of the Reiki method recommended extensive physical and mental exercises to train one’s spiritual abilities.
Usui knew exactly that this is good for the Reiki practitioners and also for the clients. With Qigong Reiki you can quickly achieve great results and at the same time you can always get better by practicing regularly. Therefore, this event is a valuable and lasting investment in your overall Reiki path.
For Qigong Reiki you do not need to know Qigong. To get the most out of it, you need the 2nd degree Shingon Reiki or Usui Reiki. All styles of Reiki are welcome!
